Your union must be in cahoots with mine. It hasn't been that hot here, but there has been a decline in laying. Three one egg days this week! Still waiting for the two youngins to get laying. The Wyandotte is getting big enough & growing wattles and comb.

You are remarkable people, and it is amazing that you didn't lose more in such horrendous heat. You know what they say… you can lead a chicken to water, but you can't make him drink. Wait, that's not right… *wink*

Hope you are feeling better today. Be well and thank you for all that you do.

Rose,

We had a rain storm last week. We could tell that evening that it was going to rain and the temperture dropped a bit as a cold front moved in. We tried to herd the 5 week old New Hamshire Red chickens into their shelters. But they insisted on staying where they were, which was right up against the outside of the shelter. The wind was blowing all night while it rained. We woke up that morning to 60 of the 500 dead. The 9 week old and 13 week old chickens were just fine. Because of the sudden cooler temps we also lost a few pigs to pneumonia. It is in these times that you understand why there are so few small family farms left.

Sorry to hear of your losses. It is always frustrating. Just remember that in nature only 5-20% of most species make it to adulthood. At least you can say you are doing better than Mother Nature! : )

Exactly -- I share your philosophy about eating meat. In fact, buying chickens from you is one way I achieve that. I don't eat meat from any animal with a history I don't know. As a result, when I do eat meat -- which isn't very often -- it becomes a more personal and precious act (and it's delicious!)

I met you briefly at your Emeryville chicken drop-off in May. It's inspiring to know your reasons for starting your farm, and for how you treat your animals. Thanks for providing a healthy and honorable meat option for the bay area.
